Background

I completed my BSc Human Life Sciences (2007) and BScMedSci (Hons) in Human Genetics (2008) at Stellenbosch University in South Africa. After a 5 month stint playing field hockey in Northern Ireland, a fortunate opportunity lead me to return to Stellenbosch where I joined Prof John Terblanche's APE lab to continue my studies grinding bugs!

One thing lead to another and before I could blink I finished my PhD (Entomology) at the end of 2013. My PhD journey was incredible with lab visits to the Sinclair Lab (University of Western Ontario, Canada) and my PhD co-promoter Jesper Sørensen (Aarhus University, Denmark).

In January 2014 I started a NRF Innovation Postdoctoral Fellowship at Stellenbosch University researching oxygen limitation and thermal tolerance in insects. During this time I travelled to the Wellcome Trust (UK) and made a return visit to Aarhus University in order to brush up on new -omic technologies.

As of September 2015, I am a postdoc in Department of Entomology and Nematology at University of Florida (ranked #1 in the world! #GoGators #UFBugs). I worked in the Hahn Lab investigating radiation stress responses in pest insects, before moving to the Honey Bee Research and Extension Laboratory to play with NGS data!

When I'm not in the lab, I continue to play field hockey. I also enjoy running, sand volleyball (a Floridian staple) and most recently, soccer!
